What is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are small restorations that are custom crafted at a dental laboratory that’s partnered with our practice. They’re small, cap-like structures that are specially designed to be placed over the visible surface of your affected tooth. Typically, we recommend this type of restoration in the following cases:

  • A large cavity filling needs additional support.
  • A tooth is severely misshapen or worn-down.
  • A tooth has just received root canal treatment.
  • A tooth is severely discolored and can’t be treated with other cosmetic services.
  • A tooth is especially weak or broken.

The Dental Crown Process

The process of getting a dental crown usually involves two appointments with our team. First, Dr. Marsh or Dr. Pisano-Marsh will complete any preliminary treatments, whether that’s conducting a root canal, placing a filling, or another service. Our team will then prepare the tooth to receive the crown by removing a small amount of enamel from it. This will allow the crown to fit over the tooth, laying flush with the surrounding teeth. We’ll then capture a digital impression that we will send off to our dental laboratory to craft the crown.

Once we receive your permanent crown, which may be crafted from gold, zirconia, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal, we will call you back in for your final appointment. Dr. Marsh or Dr. Pisano-Marsh will make sure that the dental crown is a perfect fit before permanently cementing it to your affected tooth and completing your treatment.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns have a variety of benefits to offer, with the most important one being that they restore the function and health of the treated tooth. Because each of the crowns that we provide patients is custom-crafted by our dental laboratory, they also flawlessly blend in with the rest of your smile, offering results that are natural looking and feeling.

With the protection that our crowns offer, many of our patients are able to preserve their natural teeth for a lifetime, helping them save thousands by not having to invest in a bridge or implant crown!

Understanding the Cost of Dental Crowns

While you may need dental crowns, you should learn their price before you commit. (Treatment won’t do you much good if it exceeds your budget.) So, you’d do well to see us for a precise estimate; the cost of dental crowns varies from patient to patient. Once we’ve assessed you, we can confirm your care’s pricing factors and find ways to make your crowns more affordable. To learn more, please keep reading or call us soon.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

You’ll receive an oral exam at your consultation with Drs. Marsh and Pisano-Marsh. As part of that assessment, we’ll check factors that affect your crown’s final price. These include:

  • Crown Material(s) – Depending on your crown’s final material, your treatment cost may rise or fall. It’ll likely be inexpensive if your cap is made of metal, whereas it could be costly if made of tooth-colored ceramic.
  • Degree of Damage – A dental crown will cost more for a tooth that’s severely damaged. After all, teeth with major breaks, cracks, and fractures usually need a root canal first.
  • Processing Method – Crowns processed traditionally don’t often cost much, but those processed with CEREC technology are expensive.

Note also that “cheap” dental crowns rarely work well. In the first place, their low prices stem from their inferior quality, materials, and so on. A good way to ensure quality results is to get a moderately-priced crown.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Dental insurance typically covers dental crowns, making the caps affordable. The average plan will even meet half of a crown’s cost if the treatment is medically necessary. Therefore, many patients can expect benefits once they meet their deductible.

All that being said, there are some exceptions to the rules above. Your policy may have restrictions on crown coverage, or perhaps it doesn’t cover crowns at all. That means you should confirm your plan’s benefits beforehand; our dental team will gladly help you do so.

While some dental crowns are pricey, your own don’t have to be. You can get affordable, budget-friendly treatment that meets your smile’s needs! To do so, just visit us - we’ll gladly work with you!
