An area of care that can sometimes be confusing is the usage of\nantibiotics. What are they, and do you need them receive the treatment you\nneed? These and other questions are answered as you continue reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Antibiotics?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, antibiotics are used to treat infections or certain\ndiseases. Their primary function is to attack bacteria, which are the main\nnemeses of oral health. Thus, to eliminate any existing strands and to prevent them\nfrom multiplying, a dentist may administer a fast-acting antibiotic before\nmoving forward with any other type of care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Usual Occasions for Antibiotics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Antibiotics may be used in cases of an abscess or periodontal\ndisease (gum infection). It\u2019s usually a necessary part of such procedures as\ntooth extraction, root canal therapy or deep cleaning of the gums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent an\ninfection. This type of application is referred to as premedication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are There Any Risks Associated with Antibiotics?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While in most cases antibiotics are perfectly safe, some people\nmay have an allergic reaction. Then, if the medication is used too frequently, the\nside effects can intensify. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other end of the spectrum, some patients\u2019 bodies can\nadapt to the medication over time, rendering the antibiotics ineffective. As a\nresult, an infection can be harder to treat. Because of the chances of this\nhappening, dentists are careful to only administer antibiotics if it\u2019s\nabsolutely necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are You a Candidate for Antibiotic Treatment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the ADA only recommends premedication for patients\nwith a history of heart problems that could place them at risk for infective endocarditis\n(an infection of the heart valves or the interior surfaces of the heart chambers).\nAlso included in this group are patients with artificial heart valves, those\nwho\u2019ve undergone a heart transplant and valve regurgitation, and patients with certain\ncongenital heart issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dentist may also administer antibiotics to patients with\ncompromised immune systems because they are generally at a higher risk of\ninfection. After all, patient safety is always a top priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To clear any possible confusion about whether you\u2019ll need\nantibiotic treatment, when you visit a dentist for any dental procedure,\nwhether it\u2019s for the placement of dental implants or any other type of\ntreatment, he or she will assess your overall and oral health first.
